Coilovers – the right height, comfort and settings for Swedish roads
Coilovers are one of the most popular upgrades for cars in general. You don’t just get a better-looking, lower car – you also gain better control over how the car behaves on the road and the ability to fine-tune the ride height to suit wheels, tyres and how the car is used.
In this guide we focus on everything you need to know about coilovers: when they’re worth the money, how to choose the right kit, what ride height works best on Swedish roads, and the common mistakes you should avoid.
Coilovers vs lowering springs
Both lowering springs and coilovers can make your car look lower and tighter, but they work in different ways. With lowering springs you only replace the springs and keep the original dampers. You get a fixed drop, often around 30–40 mm, and a slightly firmer feel.
With coilovers you replace both springs and dampers with a complete package that’s designed to be run at a lower height. You get adjustable ride height and, on many kits, adjustable damping as well. That makes coilovers the natural choice if you want control over both stance and driving feel, or plan to change your setup over time. If you go for the cheaper coilover brands on the market, be prepared for a fairly harsh ride.
Choosing the right coilover kit
When you choose coilovers for your car it’s important to start from how the car is used. For a daily driver, a street- or comfort-oriented kit is often ideal – a sensible drop, good stability and a setup that still works on mixed tarmac and the inconsistent surface quality of our roads.
If you’re building more of an enthusiast or track-focused car, we recommend choosing one of the bigger well-known manufacturers such as H&R, Bilstein, Koni, AP, KW or similar. For stance or show builds, a kit with a wide height range is the most important factor – but in that case you also need to be prepared to sacrifice comfort.
Regardless of focus, you should choose coilovers from an established manufacturer, with good corrosion protection, proper documentation and specifications for your exact generation and engine. At SC Styling we offer a solid range in all price segments.
Recommended ride height for daily driving vs aggressive stance
For normal daily driving on Swedish roads the goal is often to get rid of the worst wheel arch gap without making the car impractically low. A moderate drop, where there’s still a bit of clearance between tyre and fender, is a good starting point.
If you want a more aggressive stance you can go lower, especially in combination with 18–19" wheels. The lower you go, the more important it becomes to test drive properly and make sure you’re not scraping on speed bumps or having the spring perch or strut touch the inner fender.
How to adjust coilovers
Always start with the manufacturer’s recommended base settings for height and damping. Put the car on a level surface, measure the height at the same points on both sides and adjust until you’re close to the level you’re aiming for.
Take a short test drive, let the car settle and measure again. Make adjustments in small steps until you’re happy. If your kit has adjustable damping, start in the middle of the range and then go a couple of clicks softer or firmer depending on how the car feels.
Always finish with a proper four-wheel alignment after installation. It’s crucial for both handling and tyre wear.
Common mistakes with coilovers
A common mistake is slamming the car all the way down straight away. It may look extreme in photos, but it often makes the car hard to live with day to day. Instead, lower it step by step until you find a level that actually works.
Another mistake is skipping the alignment. That almost always results in a car that feels nervous, pulls to one side and wears tyres out unnecessarily quickly. Don’t forget to protect the threads with grease either, so you can still adjust the height even after a few winters.
Summary
The right coilovers can transform your car both visually and in terms of driving dynamics. Start from how you actually use the car, choose a quality kit and spend a bit of time on setup and follow-up checks. Then you’ll end up with a car that feels tailored to you – in height, feel and overall stance. Find all our coilovers here.
